Reflection Questions to Guide the Beginning of Your Year
January is here, and so many of us find ourselves reflecting on our desires, dreams, and goals for the year ahead—myself included. I’ve always done some version of this, whether casually during journal time or setting aside space with a proper planner. But this year, that theme took on a gentle shift.
Instead of asking, “What do I want to accomplish?” the question has become:
God, what is your desire for me? How can I partner with Your plans and Your original intent for my life? What might I need to shed or let go of to step in fully?
I've learned there's freedom in letting go of the idea that it all depends on Me. And that's not some free pass to neglect responsibility. But instead, there's a stirring to meet the higher call, and confront the loving convictions rather than distract myself from them. When you surrender to the hand that knows you completely, who understands every part of your story, and the true intention behind your desires, there is a peace and clarity that steps in.
Scripture reminds us in James 4:2 that “You do not have because you do not ask.” It’s not that we always receive exactly what we want, but that opening the conversation matters. Creating space for God’s heart to shape ours allows our desires to come into deeper alignment with His.
Below are a few reflection questions that helped guide my own journaling time, which is still ongoing. Truthfully, so much more surfaced when I really sat with these questions. Prompts one and two, in particular, brought a flood of “aha” moments as I reflected on both the big and small ways God showed up this past year.
If even one question stands out to you, I hope you receive it as a gentle invitation to listen closely. Maybe this is where God wants to begin the conversation.
Reflection Questions 🌟
- Where did I clearly see God’s hand in my life over the past year?
- Where did things not go my way, but later revealed God’s protection or a wiser redirection?
- What patterns, attitudes, or habits pulled me away from alignment with God?
- Where do I notice distractions interfering with God’s higher purposes for my life?
- This year, how can I treat my body as a temple, not as a project?
- Is there a word You are placing on my heart for this upcoming year?
- Is there a specific scripture You are inviting me to truly walk out?
- Is there something You are asking me to let go of so I can step fully into what’s next?
Happy New Year 🤍
May 2026 be filled with love, joy, and abundance, and guided by a deep sense of alignment and trust.

so are my ways higher than your ways
